Background of the Study
Phonetic variation in digital media reflects the dynamic nature of language in online environments. This study examines Nigerian TikTok audio clips to evaluate variations in pronunciation, intonation, and accent that emerge in short‑form video content. TikTok’s platform encourages users to experiment with their vocal delivery, resulting in innovative phonetic adaptations that blend regional speech patterns with digital creativity (Adebayo, 2023). These audio clips reveal how users adjust their phonetics to align with trending challenges, humorous content, and creative editing techniques. The research investigates the extent to which digital tools influence these phonetic variations and examines how these changes relate to broader shifts in spoken language among Nigerian youth. By comparing phonetic features across multiple TikTok clips, the study aims to document the nature of digital phonetic innovation and assess its impact on traditional accent norms in Nigeria (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although TikTok is a popular medium for creative vocal expression in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research on how its short‑form audio content drives phonetic variation. The modifications in speech patterns observed in TikTok videos are not well documented, leaving a gap in our understanding of digital phonetic adaptation. This lack of systematic analysis hampers our ability to model the impact of digital trends on traditional pronunciation norms, thus limiting theoretical and practical insights into language change in online contexts (Ibrahim, 2023).
